Tonight was Ben’s first game of the season. He is playing JV this year, and for the past couple of years, the Willow Canyon Wildcats JV teams have not been very good.
They played their rivals, the Valley Vista Monsoon, and the JV teams had not beaten Valley in the past three years.
From the first kick-off, the Wildcats dominated the field. Ben started out at center, but the coaches pulled him after the first drive. They started putting Ben in at other positions. He’s one of those players that coaches like. He’s a utility player. He’s not the biggest kid, or the fastest kid out there, but he is smart. He knows ALL of the plays and all of the positions. You can throw him in anywhere, and he’ll know what he’s supposed to do. Tonight, he played several positions on the line and got quite a bit of playing time.
By the time the game was done, the Wildcats had broken their losing streak with Valley, winning 34 – 6.
My favorite part of the games comes after the clock runs out and the teams have lined up and shaken hands.
The Wildcats all come over to the stands, take off their helmets and sing the Willow Canyon fight song to the parents.
In the photo, Ben is in the front, to the right, just behind the water cart. He was absolutely buzzing with adrenaline.
It was cooler than it’s been in a while, and the monsoons held off. We could see lightning in the distance, but not close enough to be a threat.
All in all, it was a great start to the season.
This year, as in the past couple of years, I’m participating in Susannah Conway’s “The August Break.” It’s an opportunity to just be present, look around your world, take photos, and post them to your blog. There are no rules, other than to use this as an opportunity to recharge your batteries a bit.
If you’d like to participate, join in…there are some amazing friends out here, just waiting to meet you.
